New look: Gemma Collins unveiled her new brunette look on The Only Way Is Essex series premiere last night

She has been attempting to reinvent herself by embarking on a diet and fitness regime in a bid to get down to a size 12.

And while The Only Way Is Essex star Gemma Collins looks considerably slimmer than she used to, she is nowhere near the slender frame of Cheryl Cole.

However, when Gemma unveiled her new brunette hair on last night's series premiere, James 'Arg' Argent was so confused by her appearance that he mistook her for Cheryl Cole.

But as Arg thought Gemma had transformed into the Girls Aloud singer, Harry Derbidge decided she looked like another singing sensation - Jennifer Lopez.

As Gemma shopped for a little black dress for Jessica Wright's birthday party, Harry and Sam told her she looked the spitting image of American Idol judge Lopez.

And fans of TOWIE, which premiered to a staggering 1.7million viewers last night, were quick to compliment Gemma on her new look.

One wrote: 'Wow Gemma you looked the business. Keep up the good work - dark hair on you is fantastic too.'

While another added: 'Gemma is making me rethink the whole hair being lighter, love her hair, it's reem, I'm totes well Jel.'

Further comments included: 'Gemma looks amazing!! Love her hair and bod! Hope she gets an amazing guy, Mick missed out!'

Gemma had earlier teased fans that there was something in store on the evening's show, writing: 'I hope you love the surprise on Towie tonight everyone.'

She added this morning: 'Thank you so much for all your lovely feedback xxx

Gemma was also showing off her newly-slim figure after going from a size 20 to a size 14.

Gemma revealed in her Closer magazine column last week that she is planning on a complete image overhaul to go with her weight loss.

'I'm now thrilled to be fitting into size 14 clothes,' she wrote, 'so I've chucked out all my old stuff.

'I need to go on a serious shopping trip to overhaul my wardrobe... I also went for a new hairstyle last week.'
