Six months ago, Frankie Sandford took time out of The Saturdays for an undisclosed illness.

And now the 23-year-old singer has given a revealing interview in which she opens up on her secret battle with depression.

The Essex native admits she has battled negative thoughts and panic attacks on and off since she was 15, but things finally came to a head last October, leading to her being hospitalised.

Smiling again: The Saturdays singer Frankie Sandford has opened up on her battle with depression in the new issue of Glamour's UK edition

In the run-up to seeking treatment, Sandford found herself arguing with footballer boyfriend Wayne Bride over trivial things and questioning her looks, talent and personality.

Speaking about her depression for the first time in the May issue of Glamour magazine, Sandford says she is looking forward to the future, but is realistic that 'no one is 100 per cent happy all of the time'.

She recalled the moment when it started unravelling last year: 'One night, I got upset because Wayne hadn't bought the right yoghurts. I manage to convince myself he didn't know me at all.

'It set off this spiral of negative thinking – that if I disappeared, it wouldn’t matter to anyone. In fact, it would make everybody’s life easier. I felt that I was worthless, that I was ugly, that I didn’t deserve anything.'

'I felt that I was worthless, that I was ugly': At her lowest, Sandford questioned her looks, talent and personality

After contacting her doctor, she was advised to go for a quiet break in the Cotswolds with Bridge and their two dogs, but it still didn't help.

She admitted ending up hysterical and having a panic attack, with a helpless Bridge unable to calm her.

Shortly before the break, on a promotional visit to Ireland, Sandford said she was constantly questioning whether the group's fans really liked her.

She said: 'Every time I spoke to someone, I’d be thinking, "They probably think I’m a horrible person. Am I boring them? Do I look ugly?"'

When she finally decided to seek help, Sandford admitted she was worried her fellow patients would judge her.

The May issue of GLAMOUR is on sale from Monday 2nd April

She explained: 'I was so nervous, because I was "Frankie from The Saturdays". I didn't know if people would be horrible to me and say: "You're in a successful girl band, you've got this great boyfriend, he's got loads of money."

'But nobody judged me. Nobody thought I was weird.'

Sandford said her bandmates Una Healy, Vanessa White, Mollie King and Rochelle Wiseman were shocked at what she had been hiding, but understanding.

After a month in hospital, she didn't have much time before she was back in the fold of the band, with their All Fired Up tour about to start.

Although she suffered one panic attack, generally the tour was a success and Sandford finally felt like she was back in control.

Speaking to Glamour for their Hey, It's OK campaign, in conjunction with the mental health charity Mind, Sandford said she hopes her honesty about her battle with depression will help others.

She added: 'I did lose myself, but I feel like me again now. But I try not to put pressure on myself – it’s unrealistic, no one is 100 per cent happy all of the time.”

A present and a half! Frankie Sandford got a new Aston Martin car from boyfriend Wayne Bridge for her 23rd birthday

They've been dating for over a year, and it seems things are going from strength to strength for Frankie Sandford and Wayne Bridge.

As a sign of his love for his Saturdays singer girlfriend, Manchester City footballer Wayne splashed out on a £135,000 Aston Martin Vantage for her 23rd birthday.

The pretty brunette singer was seen taking her new ride out for a spin in London today, looking delighted with her gift as she got out of the driver's seat.

As well as the sleek look of the black car, the vehicle also features Frankie's initials on the leather interior.

Frankie kept a tight grip of her 31-year-old sportsman beau as she stepped out wearing a striped T-shirt, tight jeans and a fur gilet.

Wayne, meanwhile, went for a more casual approach in jeans, a beanie hat and a black leather jacket.

The football star's extravagant gift comes just days after he is alleged to have spent a staggering £250,000 on a party for the singer.

Wayne is said to have hosted the party at his Surrey mansion, and spared no expense to ensure Frankie had the best day possible.

A source at the event is quoted by the Daily Star as saying: 'The whole thing was organised by Frankie’s sister Victoria and Wayne happily footed the whole bill. The pair of them really went to town.'

'All of us guests were led into a giant marquee. It was decorated beautifully in maroon and white and was split into two.

'One half was a cool nightclub with a DJ booth and the other was more of a chatting area.'

Frankie also tweeted a picture of the cake Wayne had made specially for the occasion, with the caption: 'Happy birthday to me!'

The pair began dating back in December 2010, with Frankie saying shortly after they began their relationship: 'I really like Wayne. It's going great with him.

'But we're just a normal couple really. To be honest, I'm really not sure how long we've been together, it's all been such a whirlwind.'

Ab-mazing! Frankie Sandford's incredibly toned stomach gets the crowd All Fired Up at V Festival

By Holly Thomas

What's her secret? Even surrounded by gorgeous bandmates, Frankie Sandford's incredible abs stole the show

No-one expected the Saturdays to don jeans and long sleeves for their V Festival performance on Saturday.

But Frankie took it to another level last night as she bared an unbelievably taut stomach for a steamy appearance on the Staffordshire stage.

The singer strutted her stuff in a miniscule crop top and miniskirt combination that whipped the crowd into a frenzy of excitement.

Frankie's cheeky smiles showed how much the singer was enjoying the attention, looking at total ease as she took centre stage.

Having been spotted a few days beforehand wearing a baggy jumper to a rehearsal for the Staffordn gig, one might be forgiven for thinking that the singer was in a demure mood.

But on the night she couldn't have looked more confident, even wearing a belly ring to draw extra attention to her pancake-flat abs.

Her amazing look only served to add to the audience's enthusiasm as the girls belted out hit after hit, a fitting warm-up to the release of their new single All Fired Up.

Little Ego Frankie? The singer has never looked more confident, displaying not a scrap of spare flesh

It's possible that Frankie is feeling a little competition from her the other girls to maintain this super-slim physique.

Band mate Rochelle Wiseman has notably dropped weight in recent months, flaunting her newly toned midriff in belly tops on nights out.

Rochelle also looked gorgeous in a skimpy crop top last night, though it didn't have quite the impact of Frankie's black number.

All fired up: The girls were on top form as they belted out hit after hit

As ever, legs were on display all round, Mollie King's super-slender pins looking stunning as always in tiny turquoise shorts.

Nevertheless, Frankie seemed totally self assured, even tweeting the day before the show: 'Positive mental attitude! Sirryyy!!'

It looks like that attitude is paying off.

The Saturdays' new single All Fired Up is out September 4.

Sweet treat: Frankie Sandford stopped off at a shop to pick up an ice cream for herself and her boyfriend Wayne Bridge

He might have enjoyed an ice cream earlier today but Frankie Sandford was his sweet treat.

And Wayne Bridge was enjoying a day in sunny London with his girlfriend when she hopped out of the car to pick up the cold snacks.

Dressed in a pair of skinny bright red jeans that showed off her super slim legs and a white vest top, Frankie, 22, looked stylish as she made the snack stop off.

The singer showed off her deep tan, thanks to a romantic break last month with her beau, as she passed an ice cream to him through the car window.

Frankie then returned into the shop for an ice cream and a bottle of water.

The couple, who have been dating for eight months, ate their vanilla ice creams before driving off from the café on the Kings road.

Talking about her relationship with Wayne earlier this year, Frankie said things were 'going great'.

She added: 'We're just a normal couple really. We love going on dates to the cinema and to restaurants.

'Wayne's really special though, and it's so different with him. He's just so sweet and shy.'

Frankie isn’t the only Saturday making the most of the sunny weather and her bandmates Una Healy and Mollie King were also out and about in the sunshine.

But it wasn't all fun as the girls had a busy start to the day with Una tweeting: 'Fitting, studio then interviews at @CapitalOfficial :)'
