When Rihanna decides to dress up for a night out she doesn't stop at just picking the right outfit to wear.

The pop star showed that even when she looks good on the outside she still struggles with her inner beauty as she ruined her smile with a gold grill, on Tuesday night.

The 24-year-old stepped out for dinner at her favourite restaurant sporting the mouth accessory as she rocked up to Giorgio Baldi for dinner with friends.

Her grill, which is a gold or bejeweled dental apparatus that sits over the teeth in the same way that a gum shield does, did nothing positive for her appearance.

Although they can be easily applied and removed as a temporary fashion accessory, they normally worn by men.

They are generally worn as a status symbol of wealth in the hip hop community and have been earning people street cred ever since the early 1980s when the blinged-out teeth became a full-blown hip-hop fashion statement.

Earlier this year Chris Brown joined rappers Kanye West, Nelly, Lil Wayne, and Lil Jon in the trend by proudly flashing his golden chompers to the dancing crowds at AV Nightclub in Hollywood.

Olympic swimming champion Ryan Lochte also wore a pair of grills after winning gold, which were customised to show the American flag.

Rihanna herself first started wearing the gold mouthpiece in 2011 when she filmed her music video for You Da One.

The singer may have found it rather difficult to eat her meal with the expensive piece of metal covering her teeth but thankfully she could have taken them out with ease.

The golden smile wasn't the only thing on show by the Umbrella singer as she also whipped out her legs for the low key dinner date.

Rihanna looked stunning in tiny black shorts, a black and white top and peep-toe boots covered with a sheer fabric.

But her face summed up her feelings at the end of a day spent remembering those tragically lost on 9/11 in 2001.

Earlier in the day, she tweeted a pic of New York City with the caption, 'We’ll never forget this day! 9/11.'

She later posted another photo on her Twitter account that told a very touching story about a woman who ran into the firefighter who carried her from the World Trade Center that day.

Rihanna's mind was at least not on the latest controversy surrounding her relationship with Chris Brown.

Her ex claimed his new neck tattoo is of a skull commemorating a Mexican holiday, after he was forced to come forward and deny the etching was in honour of his ex-girlfriend.

The 23-year-old singer put the ink on display during an event in Las Vegas earlier this month.

Comparisons were quickly drawn with the Russian Roulette singer, whom he brutally assaulted in 2009, after it echoed her face structure, arched eyebrows and plump lips after the attack.

But now Rihanna has decided to update her look once again, going for one of her most drastic changes yet with a super-short cropped hairdo.

The 24-year-old singer showcased her new style as she arrived at the Staples Center in Los Angeles ahead of the MTV Video Music Awards tonight (Thursday).

The incredibly short look is a sharp contrast to the long wavy hair Rihanna has been sporting in recent weeks.

However, it's not the first time Rihanna has tried out a more androgynous look with her barnet, as she previously sported a crop for her role as Cora Raikes in blockbuster movie Battleship earlier this year.

She also had a shorter 'do back in 2009, but the style was longer on top giving it a more feminine feel. The new look is undoubtedly the shortest Rihanna has ever had her hair.

Surprisingly, Rihanna made no mention of her new look on her Twitter page, where she usually keeps fans regularly updated with any changes in her appearance.

As she arrived for rehearsals, Rihanna looked excited about the upcoming event, and waved eagerly at her waiting fans.

As well as taking to the stage at the event, Rihanna is up for five awards including Video of The Year, Best Pop Video and Best Female Video.

And now the We Found Love singer has returned the compliment, telling Esquire magazine that she thinks the British darling is 'hot.'

In typically X-rated style, Rihanna muses: 'Ooh! Cheryl Cole is...hot. I would just like to watch her work. Preferably cleaning things on the floor. Picking up stuff on the floor. Bending over.'

The 24-year-old poses in a crochet bra that barely conceals her modesty, and in a very cheeky swimsuit that reveals a whole lot of her posterior, with thigh-high stockings.

Rihanna's comments about Cheryl come just days after she fuelled rumours that the former X Factor judge is being wooed by American Idol producers (despite Cheryl's denials).

'I can completely see why the producers at American Idol are trying to get Cheryl - she would be amazing,' she told the Daily Star. 'She was received so well on the US X Factor and most people couldn't really understand the decision to let her go.'

Some of that attention came with her incredibly controversial decision to record a song with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, following his felony assault charge against her.

'I thought people were gonna be surprised that we finally did a record together, but I didn’t see how people could think it was a bad thing, you know?' she says. 'In my mind, it was just music.'

Rihanna says she is determined to settle down in five years time. 'Hopefully I’ll have a man by then. I’ve gotta start there, right? But how far I go [with my career] is God’s plan.

'I’m just following through my destiny. I don’t think it ever ends. It just evolves.'

Rumours are circulating though that things may just b heating up again between Rihanna and ex-boyfriend Drake.

The pair, who had a brief fling in 2009, were reportedly seen getting 'hot and heavy' at a Miami nightclub.

The 24-year-old singer displayed her toned arms and muscular legs in the outfit of black bra top complete with pointed studs and a pair of tiny hotpants with fringed double slit skirt.

Accompanied by a menagerie of dancers in minimal black outfits, the number featured laser lights, smoke and some energetic dance moves.

The single is from the singer's latest album Talk That Talk which has been certified platinum in the U.S.

But the ladies lost out again tonight when finalist Phillip Phillips became the fifth male contestant in a row to be crowned Idol winner.

Jessica Sanchez, 16, came in second after a record 132 million votes were cast by the viewing public

During her time in London over the past few weeks, Rihanna was seen at countless events and parties - as well as jetting back and forward to various locations promoting her movie debut Battleship.

And Rihanna paid her own, small tribute to the late rap star at Coachella when she had 'Thug Life' scribbled across her midriff.

The 25-year-old singer tweeted a pictured of herself, joined by Snoop and Warren G with the words written in marker pen on her stomach.

She also had a large roll up in her mouth, which was possibly an imitation joint.

Her outfit was comprised a Chanel jacket, a pair of denim shorts covered in studs, a cropped vest with 'Peace' emblazoned across the front and a pair of wayfarer shades.

The words on Rihanna's stomach were in honour of Tupac Shakur, who was 'resurrected' by way of an impressive hologram stunt at Coachella over the weekend.

Of all the hotels in all of Sydney, Rihanna and Zac Efron found themselves at the same one today.

The superstars, both 24, were spotted enjoying some of the Australian sunshine as they relaxed on their respective balconies at the plush hotel.

Zac in particular appeared to be feeling the heat as he stripped off to sun his bare chest while enjoying some downtime.

As well as revealing his hunky chest the Lucky One star wore brown trousers that fell so low they revealed a good amount of his grey Calvin Klein boxers.

He was spotted playing with a tablet device and listening to music with some large white headphones as he sipped on orange juice.

Zac then covered up with a tank top and was seen climbing onto a plant that decorated his balcony.

Meanwhile Rihanna seemed a little more restless after her arrival and spent her time on the balcony snapping pictures of the exquisite view on her mobile phone.

The pair were both seen sporting the outfits they had been travelling in when they were spotted on their balconies at the Down Under hotel.

And despite the long flights on both sides, they were each keen to check out the view of the famous Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge from their hotel rooms upon their arrivals.

However the pair seem to be friends as Zac was out in force to celebrate the singer’s 23rd birthday alongside her last year.
