Back on form: Britney Spears glowed at last night's MTV Video Music Awards as she walked the red carpet in a dazzling Moschino mini dress

The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards is probably an evening the Britney Spears would like to forget.

After taking to the stage in nothing more than her underwear and lacklusterly stumbling her way around while lip-synching to Gimme More, the singer's big comeback came to a grinding halt.

But last night, exactly four years after that disastrous performance, Ms Spears proved that she is better than ever - and back at the top in her crown wearing role as the true Princess of Pop.

Four years later: The singer had her sparkle back, in stark contrast to her performance at the show back in 2007 (left)

A stunning looking Britney, 29, beamed a wide grin as she arrived at the MTV Video Music Awards last night, walking the red carpet with an ear to ear grin.

She looked happier and healthier than she has in years showing off her toned physique in a sparkling black Moschino sequin romper which she paired with platform black patent booties by Gina.

Walking the red carpet hand in hand with her former agent turned boyfriend of two years Jason Trawick, the couple kissed and cuddled and seemed very much in love.

The appearance was a far cry from the disheveled and vacant looking Britney from four years ago when she looked out of shape and confused with her ever apparent hair extensions applied in an attempt to mask the fact that she had shaved off all her hair just months before.

IN love: Britney held on tight to boyfriend Jason Trawick as the couple walked the carpet together

Honoree: Britney got a kiss from Jason as she headed up to receive her award

But last night the superstar was honored for her incredible career being awarded the big award of the night - The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award - as well as receiving a fitting tribute in the form of a troupe of young dancers who performed a routine to a collection of her songs.

As the singer accepted her award, after excitedly watching from the front row, she had a fun interaction with Lady Gaga, who was dressed in drag as her alter ego Jo Calderone.

When a smiling Britney took to the stage to pick up her Moonmen statue, she was put on the spot by Gaga who appeared to be attempting to kiss her.

'It was interesting, her character,' Britney told MTV News about the encounter.
'We got onstage and we felt it out.'

On form: Britney laughed her way through her unusual interaction with Lady Gaga, dressed as her alter ego Jo

Big night: Britney took home the awards for Best Pop Video and the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award

But the most heart warming moment of the night for the million of Britney fans around the globe was when she gave her award acceptance speech.

Seeming genuinely excited and honored, the star graciously laughed and giggled her way through her thank-you's, like the sweet and well mannered Britney we all know and love.

She sent her love to her son's Preston and Jayden saying 'mommy loves you babies,' before thanking her management, Larry Rudolph and lastly Jason, simply telling him: 'I love you.'

Britneyhas been hard at work preparing for her upcoming world tour which begins on September 22 in Russia.

After touring round Europe for 6 weeks she then heads down to South America until Christmas.

She also currently has the number ten song on the Billboard charts with I Wanna Go from her album Femme Fatale.

Britney is well and truly back and here to stay.

Cute couple: Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez appeared together at the MTV VMAs

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are clearly done with the cloak and dagger antics from the start of their relationship.

The cute couple are out and proud - maybe a little too much, judging by Bieber's PDA performance while his girlfriend was attempting to co-host a pre-show at the MTV Video Music Awards tonight.

Disney princess Gomez interviewed her boyfriend in the arrivals hall at the awards ceremony.

Excuse me! As Selena signed off, Justin leaned in unexpectedly and planted a kiss on her

And while Selena, 19, tried to act professional, Justin found it hard to keep a straight face - or his hands off his girlfriend.

The U Smile singer planted an unexpected kiss on Selena as she signed off from their interview.

A giggling Miss Gomez was a little taken aback as her 17-year-old beau continued to kiss her and nuzzle her neck in front of the live cameras and had to forcefully remove herself from his clutches.

Stop! Selena dissolved into giggles as the singer refused to stop nuzzling her neck

Before the surprise PDA, Selena was the picture of professionalism as an amused Justin answered her questions.

She grilled him on his outfit of red trousers, animal-print trainers and his accessory - a pet snake named Johnson.

'You're up for Best Male Video,' Gomez asked her popstar boyfriend. 'I wan to know - you're up against Eminem and Bruno Mars, do you feel a little nervous at all?'

Hands on: Bieber also hugged Selena onstage as he accepted the award for Best Male Video

'You know, I'm just excited to be in the category with such amazing people,' Bieber answered. 'I'm just happy to be here.'

Selena continued: 'Rumoured to be performing is Jay-Z and Kanye [West], and I know you like them both. Are you excited to see them perform?'

'Very excited,' Bieber replied. 'I heard that it was kind of a last minute thing, but I'm really excited.'

Star: Gomez arrived early to begin co-hosting duties for the VMA pre-show

Bieber also admitted he was looking forward to Beyonce's performance just as much.

Selena let down her guard a little as she prepared to cross back to her co-host Sway, telling Justin: 'Thank you so much. Thank you for hanging out, babe.'

The overly affectionate display didn't appear to annoy Selena too much, as the pair enjoyed another cuddle onstage during the ceremony as Bieber accepted the award for Best Male video.

While the world's fashion critics waited with baited breath for Lady Gaga to take the stage at tonight's MTV Video Music Awards no one had any idea what they were about to see.

The always eccentric and shocking star stunned the crowd as she performed dressed in drag, donning a scruffy looking ensemble of a white T-shirt and black trousers with a black Danny Zucco style wig and make up to draw out her masculine features.

Who's that girl? Lady Gaga stuns the audience at the MTV Video Music Awards by performing dressed as a man

Smoking hot: Gaga began her performance with an unusual speech that lasted several minutes

The unusual and quirky character - who Gaga has named Joe Calderone - then stayed with the star for the entire night, presenting Britney Spears with her lifetime achievement award and even accepting her own award 'on behalf of Gaga.'

Interestingly, the character even has his own Twitter page which currently had over 36,000 followers.

During her on stage performance Gaga brought rock legend Brian May, the lead guitarist of Queen, out to play alongside her.

The soulful songstress received a standing ovation before and after she sang her hit Someone Like You, with just a spotlight and a piano to accompany her.

The breathtaking song had the entire audience swaying and proved that Adele is definitely back at her best just a couple of months after having to cancel her American tour earlier this summer after suffering from a bout of Laryngitis.

The boys: Jay-Z and Kanye stormed the stage with heir new track Otis from the number one album Watch The Throne

Fan frenzy: Yet again a fan stormed the stage during the performance and ran towards Kanye before being stopped by security

From slow to to fast paced, Kanye West and Jay-Z then stormed the stage to bounce their way through Otis off their number one album Watch The Throne.

The boys got an extra surprise halfway through the track when crazy fan ran on stage and attempted to interrupt the song.

The duo seemed unfazed and didn't skip a beat while security grabbed the man and dragged him away.

Mom-to-be: Beyonce took to the stage in a sparkling tuxedo jacket which she ripped off at the end of the song to display a baby bump

Superstar: The singer sang and danced her way through her performance with her proud husband watching from the audience

Jay's wife Beyonce watched from the front row before taking to the stage herself.

The glowing songstress strutted her stuff for the audience in a sparkling purple sequined tuxedo jacket which she then ripped open at the end of the song to display her growing baby bump which she then rubbed affectionately.

The cameras panned to the audience where Jay-Z was beaming, as his friend Kanye jumped up and down, smacking the father-to-be on the back.

RIP: Footage was aired of Tony Bennett and Amy Winehouse was played in tribute to the late singer

In tribute: Bruno Mars sang a rendition of the late musician's song Valerie

The singer didn't let her pregnancy prevent her from bringing the house down with an energetic performance.

Wild rapper Lil Wayne was extremely energetic as he bounced around the stage during his performance of How To Love but got heavily censored by the TV Network during the telecast for his prolific use of foul language as he rallied the crowd.

Meanwhile, Chris Brown officially rejoined the MTV family by performing for the first time since he plead guilty to assaulting Rhianna back in 2009.

In a heart wrenching tribute to Amy Winehouse, her friend Russell Brand introduced a clip, believed to be the last known official footage of the star before her death last month.

Recalling the first time he laid eyes on the singer, he said: ‘I turned into the arena and I see Amy Winehouse, the incredible extraordinary voice coming from the crazy person.

Achievement: Gaga, or Joe, presented Britney Spears with a Lifetime Achievement award in an expletive filled speech

Been there, done that: Gaga tried to initiate an onstage kiss, but Spears shied away saying 'I've done that already. I'm a good old fashioned girl'

Buddies: Katy Perry and Kanye West shared the award for Best Collaboration for the single E.T.
with Katy joking that Kanye wasn't allowed to interrupt her acceptance speech

‘When a talent like Amy Winehouse comes along everyone is influenced.’

During the clip, which was shot just weeks before her death on July 23, Tony Bennett was seen performing a song with the star for his upcoming duets album.

‘I went to the abbey studios in London and i recorded with Amy Winehouse and she was so unbelievable because, of all the young artists I’ve met in the last 20 years, she was a true jazz artist in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holliday,' he said about Amy.

Affectionate: Britney thanked her boyfriend Jason Trawick as she accepted her speech

Jokers: Nicki Minaj joked around onstage about co-presenter Jonah Hill's weight loss

Rock legends: The Foo Fighters picked up the award for Best Rock Video

'She had the gift. you can't just be a jazz singer, you either got it or you haven't. And Amy is a true jazz artist.'
