He revealed he was going to lose a staggering 30lbs to play real-life AIDS victim Ron Woodroof in upcoming movie The Dallas Buyer's Club.

But it seems that it might be time for Matthew McConaughey to stop his weight loss quest.

The 42-year-old actor was seen on a family day out in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, and appeared to be severely emaciated.

Time to stop now: Matthew McConaughey appears to have taken his weight loss for his upcoming movie a step too far

Wasting away: Matthew looks literally a shadow of his formerly muscular self

Father-of-two Matthew failed to conceal his frail frame beneath a baggy navy knitted cardigan and loose-fitting jeans, wearing a red scarf around his neck and topping off his outfit with a flat cap.

Matthew even appeared to be struggling to walk along, putting his arm around his mother Mary for support as the group left church after the morning service.

However, while Matthew looked terrifyingly gaunt, his wife Camila looked healthier than ever.

The Brazilian model is currently expecting her third child with Matthew, and highlighted her blooming figure in a patterned maxi dress, which she finished off with a pair of brown cowboy boots.

She and Matthew were joined by their two children Levi and Vida for the service, with Vida looking cute in a dress and orange scarf, while Levi opted for a dapper outfit in jeans and a mini pea coat.

It was revealed last year that Magic Mike star Matthew would be playing Woodroof in the upcoming movie, after beating strong competition from stars including Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling for the role.

The Dallas Buyer's Club will tell the story of Woodroof, the heterosexual, homophobic electrician who died in 1992 after illegally smuggling HIV drugs not approved in the States.

And talking previously about the transformation required for the role, Matthew said: 'I'm playing a guy who was sick and would have loved to have been healthier but wasn't.

'For me, it's more of a mental thing than a physical thing. I'll get down to the weight I need to get to. I'm on my way, and it's what I need to do for the job.'

To lose the weight, Matthew pushed himself with regular cardio workouts, and stuck to a diet of tea and five ounces of high-protein, low-carbohydrate foods a day.
