It's faced difficulty ever since it was launched two years ago.

And now TV bosses' fears have come to fruition as it has been revealed Daybreak is to under go a massive shake-up, to the point of being unrecognisable by viewers.

TV chiefs are thought to planning to bring back the GMTV-style format that they originally thought needed revamping.

Axed: Daybreak, which launched in 2010 with hosts Christine Bleakley and Adrian Chiles, has been axed by TV bosses, who want to bring back a GMTV-style format

ITV heads spent £10 million on bringing Daybreak to TV screens in 2010 after they axed GMTV when they deemed it too old.

But it failed to ignite viewers, who declined in droves and turned their back on the programme.

Although there have been rumours circulating the show is to be scrapped ITV told MailOnline today there are no plans to axe the show but confirmed there would be a presenter shake-up.

A spokeswoman said: 'We have made a number of changes at Daybreak and, as is the case with all of our shows, we are always looking at ways in which we can continue to make improvements.'

She did not elaborate on what changes would be made but added producers had yet to decide who would present the show.

But a source told the Daily Mirror: 'If anything this shows that GMTV wasn't a failing formula and should never have been axed'.

While current presenters Kate Garraway and Dan Lobb are thought to be staying on and concentrating on the first hour from 7am, which will be dedicated to news.

New host: It is rumoured Lorraine Kelly will present the show when it is changed in September after viewing figures dropped so low

And chiefs also issued a strong denial that they will drop the name Daybreak, for fear its name is 'toxic' as it is so tied up with flop hosts Adrian and Christine.

The pair originally moved over from the BBC together after being poached from The One Show in £1 million a year deals, before they were dropped as a result of poor figures compared to the BBC.

At the time of him leaving Chiles admitted 'a lot of blame' for its failure, and said he was aware he was 'dead wrong' for the format.

Still in: Current presenters Kate Garraway and Dan Lobb are rumoured to be staying on to present the morning news

It is also rumoured Richard Arnold will return to cover the showbiz news and gossip.

Sent packing: Adrian and Christine were originally poached from the BBC but were axed last year and now bosses want to change the show's 'toxic' name

David Kermode was brought in to edit Daybreak in December after leaving Five News and vowed to improve its success.

And bosses have decided to wait until September to unveil the latest format for fear they wouldn't be able to do it during this summer's Olympics because they reportedly don't think they can compete with the BBC's coverage.

Lorraine Kelly was the original host of GMTV when she joined Eamonn Holmes, who launched the programme in 1993.

She currently presents her own show, Lorraine, later in the morning.
