Covering up: Carol Vorderman's outfit at this year's Pride Of Britain awards was significantly more modest than the dress she wore last year

At last year’s ceremony, Carol Vorderman’s revealing outfit caused such consternation even the former England cricket captain felt moved to pass comment.

As a result, when it came to this year’s Pride Of Britain bravery awards, the Daily Mail has learned that Miss Vorderman - the regular host of the event - was ordered to wear a ‘more appropriate’ dress for the ceremony, which airs on TV tonight.

The star, 50, was spoken to privately by ITV and advised that her outfit last year was too revealing especially for an event that is watched by - and involves - many young children.

As a result, in the run-up to this year’s event she was advised to cover up - by wearing a more reserved outfit.

A source told the Daily Mail: ‘In hindsight, everyone agreed that Carol’s outfit last year had gone too far for a family show, especially as it deals with such harrowing issues.

'As a result, one executive had a conversation with her and it was agreed that she would wear something more appropriate for the ceremony.’

Miss Vorderman last year wore a risque black bustier Suzanne Neville dress with Swarovski stones. In contrast, this year she chose to wore a demure grey Amanda Wakeley dress – completely covering the mathematician’s decolletage.

This year’s ceremony took place at the The Grosvenor House Hotel on Monday evening. It will be screened on ITV1 this evening.

Television executives decided to take action after a number of telephone calls from members of the public to the broadcaster following the airing of last year’s show.

Those viewers largely said the star should dress more conservatively in future.

Indeed, at the time England cricket captain Michael Vaughan caused anger when he used his Twitter site to comment on her cleavage at the event during the TV screening.

At the time he lewdly wrote how Miss Vorderman’s breasts were ‘looking mighty large on TV’ before adding that it was ‘great viewing.’

The former Countdown presenter – who recently began co-hosting daily ITV1 show Loose Women – last month revealed that she was single for the first time in more than three decades.

Miss Vorderman has been married twice previously. She then split from journalist and Daily Mail sports columnist Des Kelly last year.

The star told last month how she had previously been in a relationship – either with a boyfriend, husband or live-in partner - since the age of 15.

She explained: ‘Now's the first time in my life that I've been single and I really like it. But that's not to say I'm not dating, by the way...

Green with envy: Carol, seen here in London at the end of last month, says she feels more confident about her figure now she has hit 50

Miss Vorderman also told how she now felt more confident regarding her figure.

She added: ‘Turning 50 changed me and I'm far more accepting of myself. I'm not thin, but I am a size 10.

'I go in at the middle and very much out at the bottom and top. And now I think: 'Well, that's how I am'. ‘
